    Grundon Energy from Waste Plant

I was delighted when Norman Grundon agreed to a Group of Fuellers visiting his Lakeside Energy from Waste facility in Colnbrook. Many thousands of people will see this impressive plant every day as they drive along the section of M25 between Staines and the M4. Not many however will realise how much of our daily waste is being recycled or turned into electricity by this very impressive plant.

    Old Bailey Theatrical Event

It was a damp and blustery evening in The City of London on March 3rd as Mistress Suzan and I made our way to the Old Bailey. We had been summoned by The Judges and found ourselves in the Dock of the famous No1 Court. As we rose up the steps into the Dock we could hear the court buzzing with excitement. As soon as we were in the dock we could see the court was full with hardly any standing room.

New Freeman Barbara Vest shares her experience of becoming a Freeman of the City of London..

Having joined the Worshipful Company of Fuellers during October 2013 initially as a Freeman I was keen to ensure that I engaged fully in all aspects of this wonderful organisation so on 31st January 2014 I took one step further towards full Liveryman status by becoming a Freeman of the City of London. For a few hours I became the youngest Freeman. That was of course only until the next ceremony took place.

Pancake Races Guildhall Yard, Shrove Tuesday

It dawned a bright sunny day over the City on Shrove Tuesday. Suzan and I had stayed in the accommodation attached to Guildhall overnight and as we made our way out looking for breakfast we had our first view of the race course we were to both compete on later that morning. Guildhall yard was a hive of activity with barriers being erected a canon put in place and the main sponsor the caterers Cook and Butler setting up to cook pancakes both for the competitors to use in the races and the public to buy and munch nervously on as they await the start of each race.

    Shrove Tuesday afternoon

It took a tasty lunch in the Crypt of Guildhall for a few of us to recover our energy and take off for the planned tour of St Paul’s Cathedral which I had organised for those who came to watch and cheer the spectacle of the Poulters Company pancake races.

    City of London Guide’s Lecture

Suzan and I were invited by the City of London Guide Lecturers Association to their annual event at the Dutch Church in Austin Friars. A post war box of a church in a very quiet backwater right in the middle of the City, the Dutch Church has been rebuilt post war on a protestant site dating back to 1550. It is therefore no coincidence that this was also the location of the home of Thomas Cromwell, the 15th century English lawyer behind the dissolution of the abbeys and monasteries as a highly effective chief minister to Henry VIII - who eventually signed his death warrant. His whole story has been captivated by Hilary Mantel in her highly commended books on his life.

    Lunch with the Judges

It always feels strange when informing somebody you are going to The Old Bailey. They immediately think you are a Barrister or about to be convicted for a crime. Imagine how much more awkward that can be when you, your wife and mistress are all going to the Old Bailey on the same day. This is what happened to your Master.

    City University and Graduation Ceremony

Suzan and I arrived home from the Inter Livery Skiing competition at 10pm on Sunday night. By 9am the following morning stiff and sore with bruised ribs from a fall on the mountains, I had to be on parade at Guildhall to robe up and join a number of other Masters for the City University Graduation Ceremony.
