    Buckingham Palace Garden Party

One of the Masters major highlights each year is an invitation to Buckingham Palace to attend a Garden Party. Suzan and I were delighted to receive our invitation earlier in the year to attend on June 3rd. We proudly displayed our invitation on our mantelpiece at home and awaited the day with great anticipation and excitement.

Honourable Company of Air Pilots Livery Dinner

For the third time since taking over as Master I was invited to another Air Pilots Dinner. I have been extremely lucky and honoured to have been welcomed to this wonderful Company so many times and on such important occasions. In October Suzan and I were on their top table along with HRH Prince Andrew and Capt Jim Lovell the pilot of Apollo 8 and Apollo 13. In January I was invited to their White Tie Banquet to celebrate receiving their Royal Charter: this was the third time, their Livery Dinner at Mansion House.

Red Cross Collection on London Bridge

My alarm went off at 5am on Friday morning to kick me into life. I had to be up sharp and early to make my way to London Bridge for my stint holding a collection bucket for the Red Cross. I had to report to Fishmongers Hall on the bridge by 7.15 am to collect my bucket and get a brief. Having been given a very welcome coffee and Danish Pastry I along with a number of my fellow Masters were dispatched to various points on the Bridge to see how much cash we could squeeze out of the City Commuters making their way to their offices.

Fuellers Visit to the McLaren Technology Centre – 29th April 2014

When asked to describe a car plant many us might picture a dark, dirty, oily factory full of black handed, overall clad engineers itching for industrial action or a mug of steaming tea round a brazier. Or perhaps, our vision is a sea of robot arms moving in elegant symphony showering sparks on an almost fully automated production line. Well, the McLaren Technology Centre on the outskirts of Woking in Surrey could not have been more different.

    Election Court Lunch

To ensure I was at Mansion House in time for our 9am Election Court Meeting Suzan and I decided to drive into The City Sunday evening and stay at the Little Ship Club for a couple of nights. This proved to be a great decision as Monday dawned bright and sunny leaving me just a very short walk from Little Ship to Mansion house in my morning suite and bathed in sunshine. What a great start to our special day.

216 Squadron Disbandment Parade & Dining Out Night

Our Learned Clerk Sir Antony and I were invited to Brize Norton on Thursday 20th March 2014 to witness the disbandment of 216 Sqn RAF. 216 has been affiliated with The Fuellers since 2000 and was one of the Air to Air Refuelling Sqn for the RAF. The Sqn had been in existence for 96 years before being disbanded and in its last role flew Tristars purchased from British Airways, Pan Am and TWA. These aircraft were converted by Marshals of Cambridge from civilian airliners to a military air to air refueller.

Beating Bowel Cancer Private Lunch - Mansion House

A number of years ago we lost a good friend to Bowel Cancer. This Prompted Suzan and I to help the Beating Bowel Cancer Charity (BBC) and was one of the 3 charities I supported on my South Pole trek in 2011/12. Upon returning from Antarctica I was invited to speak at the BBC offices in Teddington and subsequently Suzan and I have been to a number of fund raising events. Through this link we met Nicholas Woolf who used to be the Chairman of Trustees for BBC only stepping down recently when taking on the position of Lord Mayors Consort last November.

    Grundon Energy from Waste Plant

I was delighted when Norman Grundon agreed to a Group of Fuellers visiting his Lakeside Energy from Waste facility in Colnbrook. Many thousands of people will see this impressive plant every day as they drive along the section of M25 between Staines and the M4. Not many however will realise how much of our daily waste is being recycled or turned into electricity by this very impressive plant.

    Old Bailey Theatrical Event

It was a damp and blustery evening in The City of London on March 3rd as Mistress Suzan and I made our way to the Old Bailey. We had been summoned by The Judges and found ourselves in the Dock of the famous No1 Court. As we rose up the steps into the Dock we could hear the court buzzing with excitement. As soon as we were in the dock we could see the court was full with hardly any standing room.

New Freeman Barbara Vest shares her experience of becoming a Freeman of the City of London..

Having joined the Worshipful Company of Fuellers during October 2013 initially as a Freeman I was keen to ensure that I engaged fully in all aspects of this wonderful organisation so on 31st January 2014 I took one step further towards full Liveryman status by becoming a Freeman of the City of London. For a few hours I became the youngest Freeman. That was of course only until the next ceremony took place.

Pancake Races Guildhall Yard, Shrove Tuesday

It dawned a bright sunny day over the City on Shrove Tuesday. Suzan and I had stayed in the accommodation attached to Guildhall overnight and as we made our way out looking for breakfast we had our first view of the race course we were to both compete on later that morning. Guildhall yard was a hive of activity with barriers being erected a canon put in place and the main sponsor the caterers Cook and Butler setting up to cook pancakes both for the competitors to use in the races and the public to buy and munch nervously on as they await the start of each race.
