The full title of this podcast is "CCUS: Between the Headlines, the Hopes and the Hard Numbers". The first of these live podcasts took place at 1500 - 1600 on Thursday 13 November 2025.
Background to the Podcast.
Our Master, Ashutosh Shastri, has had a long standing friendship with NEAH and its founder Dr Tatiana Mitrova.
The Master said:
"The Fuellers take pride in our origins starting from wood in the Medieval Age, transitioning to coal and then onto today’s complex and rapidly evolving energy mix. We first addressed the subject of CCUS in 2009 and as interest in CCUS returns worldwide, and particularly in the UK, it’s perhaps the right time to revisit this topic. We will be hosting a series of YouTube live podcasts to explore the technologies, policies, and strategies shaping the energy transition, starting with CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage).
Some said “CCUS is proven - Sleipner, Quest, Gorgon, Petra Nova!”. Others insisted it’s too costly, too inefficient, and far too small to matter. Both views reveal part of the truth - but neither captures the whole picture.
Carbon Capture Usage and Storage. (CCUS)
CCUS does work - technically. But the question that really matters now is whether it can work at scale, at cost, and in time to make a difference.
Here’s what the numbers tell us today:
77 operational projects capturing ~64 Mt of CO₂ each year - real tonnes, not PowerPoints.
Over 500 Mt of capacity announced - mostly in early stages.
So where does that leave the energy sector, industry, and investors? That’s exactly what we discussed in this podcast, which put CCUS Under the Lens: Scale, Costs & the Real Numbers for Gas with involvement of the Fuellers on both sides- the interrogator and the witness.
New Freeman, Kruthika A Bala and Dr Tatiana Mitorva teamed up as interrogators while Master Fueller, Ashutosh Shastri and Mohamed Hassan (previously the DESNZ negotiator for CCUS) now representing Carbon Direct participated to provide the evidence.
The discussion addressed issues beyond ideology and into commercial reality:
💰 What’s truly investable?
🌍 What’s working (and not) across the UK, US, Middle East, and Asia?
📉 Can CCUS for gas ever reach climate scale - or will it remain a niche industrial clean-up tool?
