ABOUT ST OLAVE'S CHURCH
St Olave's Church, Hart Street, is well-known to all Fuellers as the lcation of our Annual Thanksgiving Service, which we hold each year before the Affiliates Luncheon & Prize-giving.
Described by John Betjeman as 'a country church in the world of Seething Lane', it is one of the smallest in the city and one of only a handful of medieval City churches that escaped the Great Fire of London in 1666. In addition to being a local parish church, St Olave's is the Ward Church of the Tower Ward of the City of London.
The church is first recorded in the 13th century as St. Olave-towards-the-Tower, a stone building replacing the earlier wooden construction. It is dedicated to the patron saint of Norway, King Olaf II, who fought alongside King Æthelred the Unready against the Danes at the Battle of London Bridge in 1014. Olaf was King of Norway from 1015 to 1028 and is known for unifying his country and promoting Christianity. He was killed in battle at Stiklestad in 1030 while trying to reclaim his throne and subsequently canonised. The church of St Olave's was built on the site of the Battle of London Bridge, and the connection with Norway was reinforced during the Second World War when King Haakon VII worshipped there while in exile.
The church was badly damaged during the Blitz and was subsequently restored and re-opened in 1954. King Haakon returned to preside over the rededication ceremony, during which he laid a stone from Trondheim Cathedral in front of the sanctuary. The church was designated a Grade I listed building on 4 January 1950.
